Ma’n b. ‘Îsâ reports

Mâlik b. Anas was once returning from the mosque, leaning on my arm, when a man called Abû Al-Juwayrîyah who was accused of Al-Irjâ` caught up with him. He said. “O Abû ‘Abdullâh, listen to something I have to say and debate with me and let me tell you my opinion.” [Imâm] Mâlik said, “And what if you overcome me?” The man replied, “If I defeat you, you follow me.” Mâlik asked, “And what if another man comes and defeats us?” He replied, “Then we follow him.” To this, Mâlik – Allâh’s mecy be upon him – said, “O servant of Allâh, Allâh sent Muhammad – Allâh’s peace and blessings be upon him – with a single religion, but I see you moving from religion to religion. ‘Umar b. ‘Abd Al-‘Azîz [Rahimahullah] said, ‘Whoever makes his religion the object of argumentation will frequently change it.’”

‘Umar bin ‘Abd al-’Aziz [Rahimahullah]  used to say: “None can reach the state of taqwa until he possesses neither actions nor words that can be exposed to his embarrassment, either in this World or the Hereafter.”

He was also once asked: “When does the worshipper reach the peak of piety?” He replied: “If he puts all the thoughts and desires in his heart on a plate and then wandered around in the market, he should not feel ashamed of anything there.”

Imam Al-Bukhari [Rahimahullah] was also  also mentioned in “al-Fath al bari”: ‘Umar Ibn ‘Abdul ‘Aziz wrote to all the countries: “Search for the hadith of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and assemble them.”

In “Fath al-Bari”  byIbn Hajar [Rahimahullah]  it was mentioned that: “The first one to write down the hadith was Ibn Shihab az-Zuhriyy[Rahimahullah]  at the turn of the first century by the order of  ‘Umar Ibn ‘Abdul ‘Aziz [Rahimahullah].”

‘Ásim Ibn Bahdalah Al-Kufi [Rahimahullah], the famous qári said, “I visited Sayyiduná ‘Umar ibn ‘Abdul ‘Aziz [Rahimahullah] and a man spoke loudly. To this Sayyiduná ‘Umar [Rahimahullah] replied: “Stop! You need not talk loudly. You should only talk loud enough to make your listeners hear.” [Tárikh Dimashq]

From Maalik  (d.179H) – rahimahullaah – who said: ’Umar Ibn ’Abdul-’Azeez[Rahimahullah] used to say, “The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) and the caretakers of the affairs (wulaatul-umoor) enacted Sunnahs, taking to them is affirmation (tasdeeq) of the Book of Allaah, and the completion of obedience to Allaah, and strength upon the Religion of Allaah. Whoever seeks guidance through them will be guided, and whoever seeks aid through them will be victorious, and whoever opposes them; he follows a path other than the Path of the Believers, and the close allies (wulaat) of Allaah are not with him, and his destination is Hell, and an evil end.”

From Shihaab Ibn Khiraash [1] who said: ’Umar Ibn ’Abdul-’Azeez (d.101H) – rahimahullaah – wrote to a man,
“May peace be upon you, to proceed:
So verily I advise you to fear Allaah, and to make His Command the objective, and to follow the Sunnah of His Messenger, and to leave off what people invented after him (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam), from whatever is confirmed as his Sunnah, and his supply will suffice you.
Then know that there cannot ever be any innovation, except that a proof against it has already passed, and there is a warning in it. So adhere strictly to the Sunnah, for verily the Sunnah is – with the permission of Allaah – a protection for you. Verily the one who practices the Sunnah is one who indeed knows what opposes it from mistakes and error, and foolishness, and deep thorough study.
So be pleased with for yourself what the people (i.e. the Salafus-Saalih) were pleased with for themselves, for verily they stopped upon knowledge, and they sufficed with penetrating insight, and they were the strongest in studying the matters, and the virtue that was in them, in that case, they were the most adequate; since they (the Salafus-Saalih – Righteous Predecessors) have already preceded. So indeed the guidance is not what you are upon, rather they preceded you to it. Therefore you say, he innovated a newly invented matter after them, so no one invents something, except that he opposes their path, and considers himself to be better than them. Indeed whatever they spoke was sufficient, and whatever they described was satisfying. So whatever is below them is deficient, and there is no good above them. Indeed people fell short of their mark, so they became dull, and others were too ambitious, so they went into extremes, and verily they (the Salaf) were in between the two, so they were upon the straight guidance.”[2]

[1] He is Shihaab Ibn Khiraash Ibn Hawshab ash-Shaybaanee, from Koofah. He moved to Shaam, and lived in ar-Ramlah inside of Palestine, and he died there. He was sadooq (truthful), a person of the Sunnah. Refer to Tahdheebul-Kamaal (12/568-572).

The Khalifah ‘Umar Ibn ‘Abdul ‘Aziz [Rahimahullah] said: “The person who has none of his forefathers between him and Adam [alayhis salam] alive, is indeed deep-rooted in death.”

One day, ‘Umar Ibn ‘Abdul ‘Aziz [Rahimahullah] heard that his son bought a ring for 1,000 dirhams, so he wrote a letter to his son, saying:

بلغني أنّك اشتريت خاتمًا وفصّه بألف درهم، فإذا أتاك كتابي هذا فَبِعْ الخاتم، وأشبع به ألف بطن، واتّخذ خاتمًا بدرهمين، واجعل فصّه حديدًا صينيًا واكتُب عليه: رحِم الله امرءًا عرف قدره
“It has reached me that you bought a 1,000 dirham ring, so when this letter reaches you, sell the ring and fill 1000 stomachs (CHARITY)!!! Then buy a ring for 2 dirhams and the inside of it should be of iron and engrave on it the following words: “May Allaah have mercy on the person who knows his limits!”

Nu’aym b. ‘Abdillah, the scribe of the righteous Caliph ‘Umar b. ‘Abd Al-’Azîz – Allah have mercy on him, narrates that ‘Umar b. ‘Abd Al-’Azîz said:

The fear of showing off and vying with others prevents me from saying much of what could be said.
