Al-Tabari narrates in Tārīkh’l-Tabari (4/72):

Fātimah the wife of ‘Umar b. ‘Abd’l-‘Azīz said about his illness, “That night, his shivering became uncontrollable and he couldn’t sleep, so we kept a vigil over him and didn’t sleep either. In the morning, I told a servant of his known as Marthad, “O Marthad, stay with the Amīr’l-Mu’minīn and if he has any single need then at least you are at hand.”

We left and fell into a deep sleep due to the previous night spent awake. It was well into the day once we awoke and we went to see (‘Umar) and found Marthad sleeping outside the house. I woke him up and said, “What are you doing outside Marthad?!”

Marthad replied, “He told me to get out! He said to me, “Marthad, leave me! By Allāh, I see something which is neither human or jinn!”

When I came out, I heard him recite:

تِلْكَ الدَّارُ الْآَخِرَةُ نَجْعَلُهَا لِلَّذِينَ لَا يُرِيدُونَ عُلُوًّا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فَسَادًا وَالْعَاقِبَةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ

We grant the Home in the Hereafter to those who do not seek superiority on earth or spread corruption: the happy ending is awarded to those who are mindful of God. (al-Qasas, 83)

So I entered the room again and I saw his face turned and his eyes were closed. He had passed away.””

May Allāh have mercy upon him.

Umar b. Abdul Aziz RA said. ‘Whoever of you does good action then let him praise Allah. Whoever does wrong action, let him seek Allah’s forgiveness and turn in tawbah, because for some people there is no avoiding doing actions which Allah appointed as their destinies and which He decreed for them.’

In another narration from him, ‘Whoever does a wrong action, then let him seek Allah’s forgiveness and turn in tawbah. Then if he repeats [the wrong] then let him seek Allah’s forgiveness and turn in tawbah. Then if he repeats then let him seek Allah’s forgiveness and turn in tawbah, because they are only mistakes marked on men’s necks, and total destruction lies in persistence upon them.’

The meaning of this is that the slave will unavoidably do whatever wrong actions are decreed for him, as the Prophet S said, ‘There is decreed for the son of Adam his portion of adultery, and he will meet that unavoidably.’ [Bukhari]. However. Allah has made a way out for the slave from the wrong actions into which he falls, and he effaces them by turning in tawbah and seeking Allah’s forgiveness. If he does that then he becomes free from the evil of this wrong action, and if he persists in that, he perishes.

Ibn Rajab, Jami al-Ulum wa’l-Hikam

“I was told that `Umar bin `Abdil-`Azeez wrote to the Syrian army as follows: ‘As-salaamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullaah. Now then, whoever contemplates death frequently speaks little, while he who knows that death is certain is satisfied with a little. Farewell.’

Fatimah, the wife of Umar ibn Abdil Aziz[Rahimahullah]: I never saw anyone that would pray ﻤمand fast as much as him. Nor did I see anyone that had as much fear as him. After Isha he would just sit and cry until sleep would overcome him. And in the middle of the night he would wake up and start crying again until sleep would overcome him. Sometimes he would be in bed and think about a matter to do with the akhirah and start shaking like a bird that shakes off water.

Umar bin `Abdul-`Aziz, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “I found that punishment comes with negligence, meaning the Ayah:

[فَلَمَّآ ءَاسَفُونَا انتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ فَأَغْرَقْنَـهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ ]

(So when they angered Us, We punished them, and drowned them all).” [Surah az- Zukhruf]

Ma’n b. ‘Îsâ reports

Mâlik b. Anas was once returning from the mosque, leaning on my arm, when a man called Abû Al-Juwayrîyah who was accused of Al-Irjâ` caught up with him. He said. “O Abû ‘Abdullâh, listen to something I have to say and debate with me and let me tell you my opinion.” [Imâm] Mâlik said, “And what if you overcome me?” The man replied, “If I defeat you, you follow me.” Mâlik asked, “And what if another man comes and defeats us?” He replied, “Then we follow him.” To this, Mâlik – Allâh’s mecy be upon him – said, “O servant of Allâh, Allâh sent Muhammad – Allâh’s peace and blessings be upon him – with a single religion, but I see you moving from religion to religion. ‘Umar b. ‘Abd Al-‘Azîz [Rahimahullah] said, ‘Whoever makes his religion the object of argumentation will frequently change it.’”

‘Umar bin ‘Abd al-’Aziz [Rahimahullah]  used to say: “None can reach the state of taqwa until he possesses neither actions nor words that can be exposed to his embarrassment, either in this World or the Hereafter.”

He was also once asked: “When does the worshipper reach the peak of piety?” He replied: “If he puts all the thoughts and desires in his heart on a plate and then wandered around in the market, he should not feel ashamed of anything there.”

Imam Al-Bukhari [Rahimahullah] was also  also mentioned in “al-Fath al bari”: ‘Umar Ibn ‘Abdul ‘Aziz wrote to all the countries: “Search for the hadith of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and assemble them.”

In “Fath al-Bari”  byIbn Hajar [Rahimahullah]  it was mentioned that: “The first one to write down the hadith was Ibn Shihab az-Zuhriyy[Rahimahullah]  at the turn of the first century by the order of  ‘Umar Ibn ‘Abdul ‘Aziz [Rahimahullah].”
